At 4pm on Sunday 4th March 1945 a Lancaster bomber returning to North Luffenham from a training flight narrowly missed Edith Weston church, crashed and caught fire just outside the churchyard, killing the crew of five British and three Australian airmen.

A Lancaster Crash Memorial Service took place at St Mary the Virgin Church at 3.30pm on Friday 4th March 2016 where a memorial plaque, erected on the churchyard wall near to the crash site, was unveiled and dedicated at a ceremony on the 71st anniversary of the crash. The ceremony was preceded by a memorial service in church and was attended by local and service dignitaries. Read more about the Memorial Service.
